Who did I work with to compose my project? I did my own personal research for this project.
Was this a good approach? With this particular project I think other people o pinions would have been somewhat useful. What was the most difficult part of my writing process? Verifying all my facts was really important to me since I was speaking on some well-known topics and events. So in tern became a little more difficult. Why? I had to be sure all my numbers were right. I did not want to loose credibility. What did I do to overcome the obstacles? I tried not to relay on just one source. When did I write this project? I this the night it was due. Good approach? No it was a horrible approach, I never learn though. Where did I write this project? Half was done at school and the rest was done at home. Good approach? Yes it was a pretty good idea, I was able to catch more mistakes than usual. Why did I choose to write about my chosen topic? It’s a topic I hold dear to my hurt being from a different country. How will I adapt/revise my writing process for future revision of this project? [Be specific. Review your current six-step writing process plan and consider posting a new six-step plan.] I really want to talk more about the other side of things. Research more I have already started doing more research to revise. Don’t cut it too close, give myself enough time to get more done. Start way before I need to, I can always go back and fix it. Don’t do it all at once, always leave time for error. Get someone else prospective, fore eyes are always better than two.

ENG 100 Assignment #3: Film-Based Argument Due: Draft #1 posted to blog by 11:59pm on 3/23/17 Survivor In the film, Survivor, the screenwriter Philip Shelby writes about Kate Abbott’s trying to prove her innocence while stopping terrorist attack. Abbott is a Foreign Service officer who learns of a plot that a sniper will shoot a gas bomb in Time square on New Years’ Eve at the drop of the ball and take millions of innocent lives. Can American governmental ban on Muslims from specific countries justify recent terroristic attacks across the world? In the film Survivor screenwriter Shelby really allowed viewers to see how easily terrorist can slip through the cracks and enter in the U.S. Emil Balan for instance was able to get his hands on a Visa under a different name. Abbott had suspicions about Balan but the fact that his wife died while waiting to come to America to seek medical treatment made the case a tricky one. Abbott was trying to do her job to the best of her ability, but they had an inside man. Terrorist are not just found in other countries, there are so many cases just here in the U.S. alone that are disturbing. A common definition of terrorism is the systematic use or threatened use of Violence in order to intimidate a population or government and thereby affect political, religious, or ideological change. Take the case of the Charleston Church shooting “Dylann Roof, 21, allegedly entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during a weekly Bible study meeting and opened around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Eight people were found dead at the scene, police said. Two others were transported to a hospital, where one later died.” (Kelly Chen). They were targeted because of their skin color. He went in and sat through the bible study for a while. He pretty much gained their trusts and then decided to take their lives with a gun that was given to him by his father as a birthday gift. Another recent case was the Orlando, Florida Nightclub shooting “The attacker, Identified by law enforcement officials as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old who was born in New York, turned what had been a celebratory night of dancing to salsa and merengue music at the crowded Pulse nightclub into a panicked scene of unimaginable slaughter, the floors slicked with blood, the dead and injured piled atop one another. Terrified people poured onto the darkened streets of the surrounding neighborhood, some carried wounded victims to safety, and police vehicles were pressed into service as makeshift ambulances to rush people to hospitals.”(Lizette Alvarez and Richard Perez-pena). This was deemed the worst terroristic act on America soil since 9/11, and the deadliest on gay target in the history of the nation. The have been countless of terroristic acts on the American soil that were carried out by people that have no Muslims lies. Can recent terroristic attacks across the world justify an American governmental ban on Muslims from specific countries? I personally don’t think it justify the Muslims ban. I think there are a lot of people living in the U.S. right now that are capable of horrible crimes. Like the ones stated above. I think there should be something done to prevent terrorist from reaching American soil. I don’t think this is the way to go about it though. A refugee fleeing a war torn country will be turn down due to where they were born. This is a country that states you have the freedom of religion. The U.S. putting a ban on only Muslims countries is creating segregation. There are people from those countries that left their loved ones behind. It’s just a really sad situation for those that doing all the right thing. As an immigrant from a war torn country I am truly sadden by the Muslim ban. Prompt: I think we should focus on a parent’s love. Bill did what any loving parent would do under his circumstance. The beginning of the movie was painful to watch. They just born that person alive. It just broke my heart to think that could’ve possibly happen to someone else. We should write about what the families of soldiers goes through.
Purpose: Persuade Audience: Peers, classmates, anyone on the site Focus: A parent's love for their child and how for they would go. Style: Argumentative writing
Survivor: This was an action movie that took place in London. It was very well put together. Kate Abbott the main character was born and raised in the US. She left when she was in collage to finish her education in London. She worked on top cases for the Bureau of Diplomatic security. At one point in her career she was able to stop a plot to bomb the American Embassy. Kate was very good at her job which cost problem for her in return. Her co-worker Bill Talbot kept getting in the way of her getting her job done properly. At some point in the movie they all went out to celebrate Bill’s birthday. Naomi Mentioned Bill pre-ordering the pressed duck for all of them. They all realized they had forgotten to get him a present. As fate could have it Kate was the only one willing to go back out and find Bill something. Before she returned, the restaurant was bombed. She lost everyone she went with to the restaurant. When she tried to get help she was faced with reality. Someone was trying to kill her. This person could track her every move. He was well known and well disguised due to plastic surgeries. He was one of the best assassins in the world. As she try to make sense of what was going on she realized she was wanted for the deaths of her co-workers. So the rest of the movie she is trying to stay alive while keeping terrorist from entering the US. Quotes: Bill- is there a problem? Dr. Balan- I certainly hope not Bill- let me see this Kate- I’m not done with my review. Bill- A word. Kate- You don’t think it’s strange that a GP, who also happens to be a researcher, wants to attend a pediatrics conference? Bill- There’s, nothing odd about moonlighting as a consultant to make a few extra bucks. Besides, Naomi already did the background check. Balan’s fine. Kate- I’ll be the judge of that. Bill- look, I know you were a high-flyer in D.C. Kate- I am not here on vacation. Bill- Even when it’s slow, we’re not processing people fast enough. We’re seriously understaffed. So when paperwork gets held up by security, people start missing flights, and I’m the one that has to deal with their complaints. Unless you wanna suffer the Ambassador’s wrath. Kate- I’m doing my job, Bill. Bill- we all are. The Switch

Get to class on time so I don’t miss anything important. Put the baby to sleep earlier so he’s not in my way when I need to get my school work done. Plan dinners ahead of time so I don’t have to stop in the middle of school work to decide what to cook. Go to the learning commas to get some well needed help. Organize my entire LIFE. Rosetta Irving
English: 100 Assignment #2: Academic Mindset Argument Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research , Carol Dweck Says (Carol Dweck) Dr. Carol Dweck stated "As the growth mindset has become more popular and taken hold, we are beginning to find that there are pitfalls," said Dweck. "Many educators misunderstand or misapply the concepts.” She herself realized that what she had said had been misunderstood. She is not saying we should praise effort alone. The steps in which you take getting to the results are just as important, if not more. Dr. Dweck along with Dr. Lisa Blackwell did a study on several hundred 7th graders over the course of two years and found the children with the growth mindset did way better then the kids with the fixed mindset. The Perils of "Growth Mindset Education" [...] (Alfie Kohn) Whereas Alfie Kohn is saying it’s the entire system that need fixing. He don’t think Dr. Dweck method is going to go very far with students. Kohn said “As I’ve explained in books and articles, the most salient feature of a positive judgment is not that it’s positive but that it’s a judgment; it’s more about controlling than encouraging.” This is him doing exactly what she said. He misunderstood her point completely. She wants parents and teachers to praise strategies results not just effort. I personally believe in the growth mindset. I thought I wasn’t going to go back to school after three children. I was fixed on believing that I had chosen my path and education wasn’t on that path. As a child I had big hopes and dreams of becoming some type of big deal. It all flashed before me when I started having children. Derek Sivers give a speech on why we need to fail. I strongly believe failure is what pushed me to go back to school. If I didn’t feel like I was failing I wasn’t going to get up off that couch and get serious about school. My third child had just been born and I was home with him and we didn’t have a reliable baby sitter so I couldn’t go back to work after my 12 weeks was over. My income was hanging by its last leg. I was home and there no other way of bringing in extra income, so my husband was pretty much working to pay bills. This was a huge eye opener for me not only did I feel horrible that I was working at a dead end job. I also felt bad that I couldn’t fully enjoy my time off with my child. Something had to change I had to set myself up for better and the only way I could do that was get back in school. Without a growth mindset I wouldn’t have seen this as an opportunity to grow. I could have looked at the situation from a fixed mindset point of view. I could’ve said that it was my job that needed to be changed and not me. “A fool is someone that tries the same thing over and over expecting different result”. I wanted better for me and my family so I had to put in the necessary work. I’m we all know Steve Jobs you know the co-finder of apple, yeah that Steve Jobs. As a kid he struggled in school. He dropped out of college after just six month. For money he sold coke bottles for five cents refund. He had a grow mindset and knew that he had to put in the effort to get the results. Josh Waitzkin said “the moment we believe that success is determined by an ingrained level of ability we will be brittle in the face of adversity”. I believe what he’s trying to say here is that the moment you start to believe that your ability is tied to your success that’s when you will face failure. I believe hard work bring forth great achievements. Statistics states that you usually dies in the class you are born in, but I beg to differ. My father was one of 8 children that were raised by a single mother. My grandmother had to go to the market and sell fish every day. Anything that didn’t sell was dinner for that night. She wasn’t educated so this was the only way she could make money. dispite this my fatherwas able to make his way to the United States and get a better education. I believe that if you are driven, focus, and determined enough you can reach your goal(s). At one point I didn’t believe I had the back ground or the income to dream big. I pretty much counted myself out. I got pregnant my last year of high school. I didn’t go to prom or walk at graduation. I was just too embarrass. I wasn’t married and didn’t have any plans of the sort. I want on to taking classes a year after and earning my diploma. As a young mother college was the farthest thing from my mind. I felt being there for my child was more important at the time. After all it was partly my falt she was here. I didn’t want to ask for too much help because I didn’t want the “I told you so” speech. Not until I had my third child did my entire prospective change. I started viewing my life differently. I had been blessed with three beautiful children. My husband is the bread winner of our household. What if something disrupt our family, whether it be tragic or not. How will I provide for them? That was all it took for me after ten years and three registration attempts to finally attend college. I believe no matter how long it takes or what the obstacles are you can bring your dreams to fruition. This I Believe.

My ability and competence grow with my effort (Growth Mindset). I strongly believe this is the best mindset to have to be successful in any learning environment. Think of school as a bank; if you don’t put nothing in (effort) you won’t get nothing out (knowledge). Just like writing the more I do it the better at it I’ll get. With hard work and dedication all thing within reason are possible. If you put in the effort and sweat you can get good grades and graduate. This is how school works you show up put in the energy and time and in turn you get passing grades. You might thing that the growth mindset is setting yourself up for failure, for example what if you do show up and work your hardest and don’t get the outcome you’d hoped for? I will take a different approach. Will I be disappointed defiantly but you can’t let a bump in the road stop you, you have to keep going. The chances of you working your hardest and not getting the results you’d hoped for is almost never. Hard work pays. I hate writing I don’t even like texting if it’s more than 3 sentences. I would love to have a better relationship with writing so I work at it. I was told reading helps so I started reading more and now I get to write every week. I think I will grow as a writer by the time the semester is over. I think the issue I have with is I can’t just solve it I have to critically think and write. With math I can just solve it so it works for me but I can’t graduate if I don’t pass English as well so I put in the work needed to get me the result I’m hoping for. |
